Pre-Seminar Report: Construction of Higher Educational Sphere in Europe: Challenges of Post-2010

As part of a pre-seminar series preceding the establishment of the Joint Graduate School on EU Studies, Dr. Fumi Kitagawa led a seminar on December 25th, 2009.

Dr. Kitagawa is a Research Associate in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Bristol.
In her presentation, which was entitled "Construction of Higher Educational Sphere in Europe: Challenges of Post-2010," Dr. Kitagawa reported on the progress of her current research concerning higher education in Europe at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, her study aims to deepen the discussion about research policies, as well as the trends and prospective policies of higher education in contemporary Europe, based on her own project which was conducted at Lund University in Sweden in 2009.

Her presentation provided us with a great opportunity to learn about what kind of influences the Bologna Process had on British higher education, the relations between EHEA and ERA, and how the trends in European research policies and university systems have been changing.

We were truly honored to have a number of audience members from outside our campus, despite it having been the busy season at the end of the year. Following Dr. Kitagawa's presentation, there were lively discussions and questions, concerning topics such as educational policies in Europe and strategies for studying abroad.
